Duties and Responsibilities: Periodontists treat common diseases and
conditions of the gums and bones that support people’s teeth, such as gingivitis.
All dentists require a license
to practice professionally, but dentists that practice in one of the nine
specialties of dentistry require additional licensing from each specialty’s
respective Board. Periodontists are credentialed by the American Board of
Periodontology.
Salary: $144,230
Education: Periodontists
earn bachelor's degrees in chemistry, biology or a related topic, then attend a
dental school accredited by the American Dental Association, obtaining either a
DDS, a Doctor of Dental Surgery, or DMD, a Doctor of Dental Medicine, degree. A
periodontist then must complete three years of specialty education at an
American Dental Association-approved graduate/residency program.
